American Gods by Neil Gaiman is a supernatural fantasy novel that blends modern America with ancient mythology. The story follows Shadow Moon, an ex-convict who becomes the bodyguard for Mr. Wednesday, a mysterious conman who is actually an incarnation of an old god. Together, they journey across the United States to rally the fading old gods—deities brought to America by immigrants—as they prepare for an impending conflict against the new gods of technology, media, and modern consumerism. The novel explores themes of belief, identity, and cultural transformation, weaving rich folklore with a contemporary road trip narrative that reveals the often dark and complex side of America and its myths.
