In this late novel by Kurt Vonnegut, the aging abstract expressionist painter Rabo Karabekian sets out to write his life story at the insistence of a sharp-tongued widow who becomes his houseguest. What begins as a reluctant memoir unfolds into a wry, reflective account of a life shaped by war, ambition, artistic fashion, and disappointment. Through Rabo’s voice, Vonnegut explores the meaning of art, the tension between appearance and truth, and the uneasy relationship between popular taste and high culture. By turns satirical and deeply humane, the book blends humor with melancholy, offering a meditation on creativity and integrity from one of America’s most distinctive and incisive literary voices.
