In this darkly comic and deeply humane novel, Kurt Vonnegut follows Rudy Waltz, a man forever defined by a childhood accident in which a stray bullet from his rifle kills a pregnant woman. Branded a murderer before he understands the meaning of the word, Rudy grows up in the shadow of guilt, public judgment, and his own bewilderment about fate and responsibility. As his life unfolds against the anxieties of the Cold War, Vonnegut explores themes of free will, moral luck, loneliness, and the absurd fragility of human life.
Written in Vonnegut’s signature blend of satire, melancholy, and sharp social observation, this novel will appeal to readers who appreciate dark humor paired with philosophical reflection and compassionate insight into flawed, ordinary people.
