A richly detailed historical novel centered on the 13th‑century Franciscan scholar Roger Bacon, this book explores the life of a man far ahead of his time. Tracing Bacon’s struggles within the rigid structures of the medieval Church, it brings to life his passionate advocacy of empirical science, experimentation, and learning in an age wary of new ideas. The narrative examines the tension between faith and reason, authority and inquiry, and the personal cost of intellectual courage.
Written by an acclaimed science fiction author and Hugo Award winner, this work forms part of his thematic exploration of knowledge and belief. Though grounded in meticulous historical research, it reads with the urgency and depth of a novel about ideas that still resonate today. Ideal for readers interested in medieval history, the history of science, or thoughtful fiction about the conflict between innovation and orthodoxy.
