A darkly comic and unsettling novella by Graham Greene, this story centers on a young translator in Geneva who becomes entangled with a grotesquely wealthy industrialist known for hosting extravagant “bomb parties.” At these gatherings, guests endure humiliation and moral compromise in exchange for lavish gifts, exposing the corrosive effects of greed and the emptiness of materialism. As the narrator falls in love with the magnate’s daughter, he is drawn into a bitter clash between integrity and cynicism. Lean and sharp, the novel blends satire with moral inquiry, reflecting Greene’s enduring fascination with faith, corruption, and the frailties of the human heart.
