The first in Henning Mankell’s acclaimed Kurt Wallander series, this novel introduces the brooding Swedish inspector as he investigates the brutal murder of an elderly farming couple in rural Skåne. When a dying word uttered by one of the victims points toward foreign involvement, the crime ignites simmering racial tensions and exposes deep anxieties within Swedish society.
Mankell, one of Scandinavia’s most influential crime writers, combines a gripping police procedural with a thoughtful exploration of xenophobia, social change, and moral uncertainty. Stark, atmospheric, and psychologically astute, this is a compelling start to a series that helped define modern Nordic noir and will appeal to readers who appreciate character-driven mysteries with a strong sense of place.
