A landmark of Gothic fiction and early science fiction, this novel tells the story of an ambitious young scientist who defies natural limits and succeeds in creating life—only to recoil from the being he brings into the world. Told through layered narratives and framed as a tale of exploration and discovery, it explores the devastating consequences of isolation, rejection, and unchecked ambition. The “monster” at its heart is rendered with surprising depth, raising unsettling questions about responsibility, empathy, and what it truly means to be human.
Written by a young Romantic-era author in the early nineteenth century, the book reflects contemporary debates about science, revolution, and the power of imagination. Its themes of creation and creator, alienation, and moral accountability remain strikingly modern.
