A darkly comic and deeply satirical novel, this work follows Eugene Debs Hartke, a disillusioned Vietnam veteran who becomes a teacher at a small college situated next to a massive prison. As his life unravels amid personal failures and institutional absurdities, he becomes entangled in events that spiral far beyond his control. Through Hartke’s sardonic, fragmented narration, the story explores themes of war, education, capitalism, race, and the moral contradictions of American society.
Written in Kurt Vonnegut’s unmistakable voice—wry, humane, and sharply critical—this novel blends humor with melancholy to examine the fallout of modern history on individual lives. Readers who appreciate biting social commentary, unconventional structure, and Vonnegut’s signature blend of cynicism and compassion will find much to admire here.
