Indian Myth and Legend by Donald A. Mackenzie is a comprehensive exploration of India's ancient myths and legends drawn from the rich Sanskrit literature. Published in the early 20th century, the book retells captivating stories of gods, goddesses, heroes, epic battles, giants, fairies, and demons, while tracing the evolution from Vedic deities to post-Vedic developments like Brahmanism, Buddhism, and Jainism. Mackenzie examines the symbolism, moral lessons, cosmic themes, and cultural influences behind these tales, highlighting their role in shaping India's religious and social heritage amid ethnic migrations and philosophical shifts. It offers readers an accessible entry into the grandeur of Indian folklore, connecting it to broader anthropological insights, though some archaeological interpretations may feel dated today.
