Set during the American Civil War, this beloved classic follows the four March sisters—Meg, Jo, Beth, and Amy—as they grow from girlhood into young adulthood under the steady guidance of their mother while their father is away at war. Each sister struggles with her own dreams, flaws, and ambitions, from artistic longing to literary aspirations, and each must learn hard lessons about love, loss, responsibility, and self-worth.
Drawing on her own family life, Louisa May Alcott crafts a warm, intimate portrait of domestic life that explores themes of sisterhood, resilience, generosity, and the search for personal identity. Both tender and spirited, this enduring novel continues to resonate with readers who appreciate character-driven stories about family bonds and the challenges of growing up.
