Martin Chuzzlewit by Charles Dickens, serialized from 1843 to 1844, satirizes selfishness through the dysfunctional Chuzzlewit family. Wealthy patriarch Old Martin suspects his greedy relatives of eyeing his fortune, disinheriting his grandson young Martin after the latter falls for Martin's ward, the orphan Mary Graham. Disowned and apprenticed to the hypocritical architect Seth Pecksniff, young Martin endures betrayal before traveling to America with loyal companion Mark Tapley, facing swindles and disillusionment there. Back in England, family intrigues involving villains like Jonas Chuzzlewit and comic figures like Mrs. Gamp culminate in redemption, reconciliation, and Martin's marriage to Mary, highlighting Dickens's critique of greed.
