Oh! Calcutta! is an influential avant-garde theatrical revue that premiered in 1969, conceived by British drama critic Kenneth Tynan. The production is notable for its bold exploration of sexual themes and its incorporation of nudity, which was groundbreaking for its time. It consists of a series of sketches and musical numbers that reflect the cultural and social upheaval of the 1960s, drawing inspiration from various artistic movements and challenging conventional norms. The title itself references the city of Calcutta, symbolizing a place of both beauty and chaos, which mirrors the show's eclectic and provocative content. Over the years, Oh! Calcutta! has been revived multiple times, maintaining its status as a significant work in the landscape of modern theater, while also sparking discussions about artistic freedom and societal values.
