Set in a psychiatric hospital in Oregon, this powerful novel is narrated by Chief Bromden, a long-term patient who pretends to be deaf and mute. The arrival of the rebellious and charismatic Randle P. McMurphy disrupts the ward’s rigid routine, bringing him into direct conflict with the coldly authoritative Nurse Ratched. As McMurphy challenges the institution’s oppressive rules, the novel explores themes of individuality versus conformity, freedom, power, and the cost of resistance.
Written by Ken Kesey, a key figure in the 1960s counterculture, the book reflects broader social tensions of its era while remaining deeply human and intimate. By turns darkly comic and tragic, it remains a compelling, thought-provoking classic about sanity, control, and the struggle to retain one’s identity in a dehumanizing system.
