Silverview by John le Carré is a gripping espionage novel centered on Julian Lawndsley, a former city professional who leaves his high-flying job to run a small bookstore in a quiet English seaside town. His tranquil life is disrupted when he meets Edward Avon, a mysterious Polish émigré with a complex past as a retired MI6 agent and former communist. As suspicions of a dangerous intelligence leak arise, the story explores themes of innocence versus experience and public duty against private morals. Silverview delves deeply into loyalty, secrets, and the blurred lines between truth and deception in the world of espionage, asking what one owes to their country when it is no longer recognizable. This was John le Carré's final novel, published posthumously, and is noted for its thoughtful, suspenseful narrative.
