The Alchemist

Paulo Coelho’s The Alchemist is a philosophical fable and coming-of-age adventure about Santiago, a young Andalusian shepherd who dreams of a hidden treasure near the Egyptian pyramids. Encouraged to pursue his “Personal Legend,” he leaves the familiar landscape of southern Spain and begins a journey through North Africa and the Sahara.

Along the way, Santiago encounters merchants, travelers, an English student, a desert alchemist and Fatima, each of whom contributes to his understanding of courage, intuition, love and the language of the world. The novel combines spiritual reflection with an accessible narrative about following one’s deepest aspirations while remaining attentive to the lessons offered by experience. It is suitable for readers interested in inspirational fiction, symbolism, self-discovery and modern literary parables.
