A departure from John le Carré’s celebrated espionage fiction, this 1971 novel turns its gaze inward to explore obsession, self-deception, and emotional betrayal. The story follows Aldo Cassidy, a respectable art dealer whose carefully ordered life begins to unravel after he befriends a charismatic young drifter and becomes entangled in a fraught triangle involving the drifter’s girlfriend. What begins as fascination slides into jealousy and moral compromise, exposing the vulnerabilities beneath middle-class propriety.
Le Carré, best known for his masterful Cold War spy novels, brings the same psychological acuity and precise prose to this intimate drama. Readers interested in character-driven fiction, studies of masculinity and desire, and the darker undercurrents of seemingly ordinary lives will find this an intriguing and unsettling work.
