The National Gallery, London by Philip Hendy is a concise, image-rich survey of the gallery’s collection in which its former director selects and comments on many of its finest works, from early Italian painting to the nineteenth century. Balancing scholarly insight with accessible language, Hendy explains the historical development of the collection while highlighting key masterpieces and their place in European art. The book serves both as an introduction for general visitors and as a compact reference to one of the world’s most celebrated assemblies of paintings.
