Toni sat on a hard wooden bench in a small fishing boat, never taking his eyes off the island that lay in the distance, in front of the bow, on the sparkling surface of the blue sea. He felt exhausted with fatigue, but at the same time anxious and excited. It seemed to him that he was dreaming. Not even two full days had passed since the moment he had boarded the plane in Los Angeles. The goal of his journey was the city of Split. He had been born there, but his family came from the island. Images from his school years in Split were constantly before his eyes, but the memories of the island were even more vivid. Toni had left his homeland in 1941, during World War II. He was eighteen years old at the time. For many years, Toni had wanted to return and see again the place where he had been born and where he had spent his youth. Now, after almost thirty years, it had become a reality. It seemed impossible to him that this boat was taking him to his beloved island and that he would soon be there.
