A darkly comic and deeply felt family saga, this novel follows the eccentric Berry family from New England to Vienna and beyond as they pursue their improbable dream of running grand hotels. Narrated by the middle child, the story traces their lives through triumph, disaster, love, sexual awakening, political unrest, and personal loss. Along the way, Irving blends absurdity and tragedy with a tenderness that keeps the characters vividly human.
John Irving, acclaimed for *The World According to Garp*, is known for his sprawling plots, unconventional families, and fearless engagement with difficult subjects. Here, he explores themes of loyalty, resilience, grief, and the ways families both wound and sustain us. By turns outrageous and heartbreaking, the novel balances satire with sincerity, offering a rich, emotionally layered reading experience.
