A classic of Victorian erotic literature, this novel presents itself as the confessional memoir of a young man initiated into a secret world of sensual indulgence and flagellant ritual. Framed as a philosophical exploration of pleasure in the spirit of Epicureanism, it blends libertine reflection with explicit scenes that pushed the boundaries of its time. Edward Sellon, a nineteenth-century writer and translator associated with underground erotic publishing and early translations of the Marquis de Sade, brings both classical allusion and transgressive daring to the narrative. Of interest to readers of literary erotica and the history of clandestine Victorian fiction, it offers insight into the period’s hidden sexual imagination.
