Set in a small Midwestern town, this ambitious novel follows a weary police chief as he reflects on his long pursuit of a mysterious drifter known as the “Sunlight Man.” What unfolds is less a conventional crime story than a searching meditation on good and evil, faith and doubt, and the fragile moral fabric of American community life. Through layered memories and philosophical digressions, the narrative explores isolation, spiritual longing, and the difficulty of genuine human connection.
Written by the acclaimed author of *Grendel*, the book showcases his characteristic blend of intellectual depth and moral inquiry. Readers drawn to psychologically complex characters, ethical questions, and richly textured small-town settings will find this a challenging and rewarding work from one of the most thoughtful American novelists of his generation.
