The Simulacra is a 1964 science fiction novel by American writer Philip K. Dick. The novel portrays a future totalitarian society apparently dominated by a matriarch, Nicole Thibodeaux. It revolves around the themes of reality and illusionary beliefs, as do many of Dick’s works. Additionally, it touches on Nazi ideology.
To the Lighthouse is a 1927 novel by Virginia Woolf. The novel centres on the Ramsay family and their visits to the Isle of Skye in Scotland between 1910 and 1920. Following and extending the tradition of modernist novelists like Marcel Proust and James Joyce, the plot of To the Lighthouse is secondary to its philosophical introspection. Cited as a key example of the literary technique of multiple focalization, the novel includes little dialogue and almost no direct action; most of it is written as thoughts and observations. To the Lighthouse is made up of three powerfully charged visions into the life of the Ramsay family, living in a summer house off the rocky coast of Scotland. There’s maternal Mrs. Ramsay, the highbrow Mr. Ramsay, their eight children, and assorted holiday guests. From Mr. Ramsay’s seemingly trivial postponement of a visit to a nearby lighthouse, Virginia Woolf examines tensions and allegiances and shows that the small joys and quiet tragedies of everyday life could go on forever. The novel recalls childhood emotions and highlights adult relationships. Among the book’s many tropes and themes are those of loss, subjectivity, the nature of art and the problem of perception.

Nisam mogla vjerovati. Riječi mi nisu dolazile do mozga. Pokušavaju li me to oni zastrašiti toliko da se vratim? Kako uopće mogu govoriti o tome da će me ubiti? No kada sam pogledala majku i oca, vidjela sam da misle ozbiljno.
Peter Gay will inevitably leave his stamp on our conception of the Enlight- ment for decades to come. The sheer bulk of his writing on the subject alone will ensure that. He began his re-interpretation of the movement in 1959 with Voltaire’s the Poet as Realist, showing the foremost philosophe to have been a much more liberal and practical political thinker than had often been assumed. There followed in 1964 The Party of Humanity, a series of essays in which Gay challenged some of the commonplace characterizations of the philosophes, especially the notion that they were impractical idealists. Then in 1966 he published The Rise of Modern Paganism, the first volume of his interpretation of the Enlightenment. He completed this analysis in 1969 with a second tome entitled The Science of Freedom. Finally last year he capped his work with The Bridge of Criticism, a debate among Lucian, Eras- mus, and Voltaire which the author admits amounts to a polemic on behalf of the Enlightenment. Meanwhile he had propagated his view of the movement in the introductions to his translations of Voltaire’s Philosophical Dictionary and Candide, his anthologies of the works of Deists and of Locke on educa- tion, and his numerous articles and public lecture.
Raymond of Aguilers was a participant in and chronicler of the First Crusade (1096–1099). During the campaign he became the chaplain of Count Raymond IV of Toulouse, the leader of the Provençal army of crusaders. His chronicle, entitled Historia Francorum qui ceperunt Iherusalem, which he co-wrote with Pons of Balazun, ends with the events immediately following the capture of Jerusalem in 1099. Biography Raymond was probably born second half of the 11th century in the vicinity of Toulouse. Aguilers is probably a reference to the village of Aiguilhe. Before the crusade, Raymond was a lay canon (deacon) of the cathedral of Le Puy. He probably travelled originally in the entourage of Bishop Adhemar of Le Puy, the papal legate. There is a purported charter of Bishop Adhemar that refers to his chancellor as Raymond of Aguilhes, but the existence of this charter and the identification of the chancellor and the canon are doubtful. Raymond was ordained a priest during the Siege of Antioch in 1098 and was made a chaplain to Count Raymond and thus a member of his household after the death of Raymond’s previous confessor, Bishop William of Orange. After the successful conquest of Jerusalem he was the likely author of the letter the crusaders wrote to Pope Urban II in 1099.
An academic study of the sociology of rock looks at the roots of the musical form, the social importance and power of rock as reflected in the music industry itself, and the relationship between rock music and its consumers.
“An essay in origins … as theoretical as Hawking and Gorst in trying to see into the deep past. McWhorter is a clear and witty writer.”— Harper’s In the first book written for the layperson about the natural history of language, linguistic professor John McWhorter ranges across linguistic theory, geography, history, and pop culture to tell the fascinating story of how thousands of very different languages have evolved from a single, original source in a natural process similar to biological evolution. There are approximately six thousand languages on Earth today, each a descendant of the tongue first spoken by Homo sapiens some 150,000 years ago. While laying out how languages mix and mutate over time, linguistics professor John McWhorter reminds us of the variety within the species that speaks them, and argues that, contrary to popular perception, language is not immutable and hidebound, but a living, dynamic entity that adapts itself to an ever-changing human environment. Full of humor and imaginative insight, The Power of Babel draws its illustrative examples from languages around the world, including pidgins, Creoles, and nonstandard dialects.
The classic book on the development of human language by the world`s leading expert on language and the mind. In this classic, the world`s expert on language and mind lucidly explains everything you always wanted to know about language: how it works, how children learn it, how it changes, how the brain computes it, and how it evolved. With deft use of examples of humor and wordplay, Steven Pinker weaves our vast knowledge of language into a compelling story: language is a human instinct, wired into our brains by evolution. The Language Instinct received the William James Book Prize from the American Psychological Association and the Public Interest Award from the Linguistics Society of America. This edition includes an update on advances in the science of language since The Language Instinct was first published.
