An analysis of the problems faced by the UN and NATO in the post-Cold War era, this text is an account of peacekeeping in Bosnia in 1994. Taken from a diary, contemporary documents and photographs collected at the time, January 1994 to January 1995, this is the testimony of the former commander of the United Nations Protection Force. Telling the story of how 23,000 young peace keepers struggled to sustain the peace process during a time when many influences within Bosnia and abroad were attempting to undermine the efforts of the UN, this text demonstrates that the aims of the mission were achieved. The difficulties of combining peace keeping with humanitarian action, the extent of manipulation of international opinion by the media and politicians and the key role played by the US and the UN in reversing Clinton’s policy on Bosnia are considered.
In a shocking and deeply disturbing tour de force, David Rieff, reporting from the Bosnia war zone and from Western capitals and United Nations headquarters, indicts the West and the United Nations for standing by and doing nothing to stop the genocide of the Bosnian Muslims. Slaughterhouse is the definitive explanation of a war that will be remembered as the greatest failure of Western diplomacy since the 1930s. Bosnia was more than a human tragedy. It was the emblem of the international community’s failure and confusion in the post-Cold War era. In Bosnia, genocide and ethnic fascism reappeared in Europe for the first time in fifty years. But there was no will to confront them, either on the part of the United States, Western Europe, or the United Nations, for which the Bosnian experience was as catastrophic and demoralizing as Vietnam was for the United States. It is the failure and its implications that Rieff anatomizes in this unforgiving account of a war that might have been prevented and could have been stopped.

The World’s Religions, by beloved author and pioneering professor Huston Smith (Tales of Wonder), is the definitive classic for introducing the essential elements and teachings of the world’s predominant faiths, including Hinduism, Buddhism, Confucianism, Taoism, Judaism, Christianity, Islam, as well as regional native traditions. This revised and updated edition provides sympathetic descriptions of the various traditions, explaining how they work “from the inside,” which is a big reason why this cherished classic has sold more than two million copies since it first appeared in 1958.

In January 2002, Rory Stewart walked across Afghanistan, surviving by his wits, his knowledge of Persian dialects and Muslim customs, and the kindness of strangers. By day he passed through mountains covered in nine feet of snow, hamlets burned and emptied by the Taliban, and communities thriving amid the remains of medieval civilizations. By night he slept on villagers’ floors, shared their meals, and listened to their stories of the recent and ancient past. Along the way Stewart met heroes and rogues, tribal elders and teenage soldiers, Taliban commanders and foreign-aid workers. He was also adopted by an unexpected companion—a retired fighting mastiff he named Babur in honor of Afghanistan’s first Mughal emperor, in whose footsteps the pair was following. Through these encounters—by turns touching, confounding, surprising, and funny—Stewart makes tangible the forces of tradition, ideology, and allegiance that shape life in the map’s countless places in between.
Misha Glenny’s acclaimed account of the war in former Yugoslavia contains substantial new material that discusses the end of the five-year conflict and looks ahead to an uneasy future in this turbulent region.

Knjiga Betoven Branka Lazarevića bavi se životom i delom Ludviga van Betovena, ističući njegove unutrašnje borbe i velike umetničke domete uprkos teškim životnim okolnostima poput gubitka sluha. Kroz detalje o njegovom životu i komponovanju, knjiga osvetljava kako je Betoven ostao dosledan idealima i snazi kreativnosti u teškim vremenima.
