Besedar bejske tramuntane

Challenging both authoritarian moral systems and moral relativism, he argues for a humanistic ethics grounded in human nature, reason, and the fulfillment of our potential. Fromm examines concepts such as conscience, character, virtue, happiness, and self-realization, asking what it truly means to be “good” for oneself and for others. Written in clear, accessible prose, the book reflects Fromm’s broader project as a social psychologist and humanist thinker: to reconcile freedom with responsibility and individuality with genuine relatedness. It will appeal to readers interested in philosophy, psychology, ethics, and the enduring question of how to live well.

The Sane Society

In this influential work of social psychology and humanist philosophy, the author examines the malaise beneath the surface of modern industrial society. Arguing that material prosperity and technological progress have not brought genuine well‑being, he explores how consumerism, alienation, and conformity can foster a subtle kind of collective “insanity.” Drawing on psychoanalysis, sociology, and Marxist humanism, he contrasts a society organized around having with one centered on being, love, and productive work. The book asks what it would mean to create social structures that nurture mental health rather than undermine it, and it offers a searching critique of both capitalist and authoritarian systems. Written by a prominent mid‑20th‑century social psychologist known for bridging Freud and Marx, this remains a provocative, accessible meditation on freedom, responsibility, and the conditions for a truly sane society.

David Copperfield

While accompanying his Romanian-born wife on a visit to her homeland, Corde contemplates political repression abroad and social breakdown at home, probing questions of justice, responsibility, and intellectual integrity. Polar Star

Set aboard a massive Soviet factory ship in the icy Bering Sea, this novel finds Moscow investigator Arkady Renko exiled from his former life and working as a lowly fish processor. When the frozen body of a young woman is discovered in the ship’s catch, Renko is drawn back into the role he cannot escape: that of a detective seeking truth in a system built on secrecy and fear. As the vessel steams toward American waters, political tensions mount and suspicion falls on everyone aboard. Martin Cruz Smith, acclaimed for introducing Renko in *Gorky Park*, blends taut suspense with a vivid portrait of late–Soviet society. Atmospheric and psychologically astute, this is a gripping mystery that explores exile, moral compromise, and the stubborn persistence of conscience under pressure.

Oliver Twist

A gripping portrait of poverty and resilience in Victorian England, this classic follows a young orphan who escapes the cruelty of the workhouse only to fall in with a band of pickpockets in London. As he struggles to survive amid crime, exploitation, and indifference, his innate innocence sets him apart from the harsh world around him. Through memorable characters and vivid social detail, the novel exposes the injustices of 19th‑century urban life, especially toward children and the poor. One of Dickens’s most enduring works, it combines suspense, social criticism, and moral drama, making it a powerful and compelling read for lovers of classic literature.

Burr

A bold reimagining of the early American republic, this novel gives voice to Aaron Burr, one of the most controversial and enigmatic figures of the Revolutionary era. Framed through the recollections of a young law clerk in 1830s New York, the aging Burr recounts his political career, his rivalry with Alexander Hamilton, and his fraught relationships with Washington and Jefferson. The result is a sharp, revisionist portrait that questions the myths surrounding the “Founding Fathers” and exposes the ambition, intrigue, and personal vendettas behind the nation’s birth. Written by a celebrated American novelist and essayist known for his wit and historical insight, this book will appeal to readers who enjoy intelligent historical fiction that challenges orthodox history and brings the past vividly—and provocatively—to life.
