The Redhunter: A Novel Based on the Life of Senator Joe McCarthy
Drawing on the author’s own firsthand knowledge of the subject, a historical novel chronicles the life and times of Wisconsin Senator Joseph McCarthy and his crusade against Communism, offering a stunning portrait of the events and personalities of the Cold War world. A fictional portrait of Joe McCarthysympathetic but not sanitizedin which clay feet replace cloven hooves. Here’s 20-year-old McCarthy needing to pass a written exam in order to get back into high school. But he’s not good at written exams. To him, it seems more efficient simply to draft a friend to take the test for him. Some years later, running for his first elective office and facing a popular incumbent, he informs the tax-jittery electorate that his rival has earned between $175,000 and $200,000. He neglects to add that it took 20 years for this sum to accrue. Sharp dealing, half-truths, and innuendoes abound, and McCarthy detractors will point to these as the mark of the man. But Buckley wants his readers to see McCarthy through the eyes of Harry Bontecou, the novel’s second-string hero. Harry, young, brilliant, politically conservative, and fervently anti-Soviet, views McCarthy as standing in the nation’s first line of defense against an enemy far too lightly regarded. It’s the mans constancy, courage, and foresight that draw Harry to him. To Harry (as to McCarthy), it’s clear that only fools or villains can doubt that loyalty risks operate in the State Department, shaping (and corrupting) American foreign policy. Harry signs on with the redhunting senator, and through him we witness most of the events constituting his meteoric rise and calamitous fall in just a four-year period starting in 1950. We watch the offstage McCarthy as wellthe easygoing charmer, the blindly loyal friend, the smitten lover, the hapless drunk. And then, at the climactic Army-McCarthy hearings, we see him come apart, the victim of his own excesses. But, according to his friend Harry, hes never small-minded or mean-spirited. Brisk, engrossing, vintage Buckley (Brothers No More, 1995, etc.). Given that it’s a tale unabashedly partisan, it isfor the most partsurprisingly credible. (Author tour)

PEARL HARBOR FINAL JUDGEMENT
Description – On December 6, 1941, Admiral Husband E. Kimmel, commander in chief of the United States Pacific Fleet, assured his staff that the Japanese would not attack Pearl Harbor. The next morning, Japanese carriers steamed toward Hawaii to launch one of the most devastating surprise attacks in the history of war, proving the admiral disastrously wrong. Immediately, an investigation began into how the American military could have been caught so unaware. The results of the initial investigation failed to implicate who was responsible for this intelligence debacle. Secretary of War Henry L. Stimson, realizing that high-ranking members of the military had provided false testimony, decided to reopen the investigation by bringing in an unknown major by the name of Henry C. Clausen. Over the course of ten months, from November 1944 to September 1945, Clausen led an exhaustive investigation. He logged more than fifty-five thousand miles and interviewed over one hundred military and civilian personnel, ultimately producing an eight-hundred-page report that brought new evidence to light. Clausen left no stone unturned in his dogged effort to determine who was truly responsible for the disaster at Pearl Harbor. Pearl Harbor: Final Judgement reveals all of the eye-opening details of Clausen’s investigation and is a damning account of massive intelligence failure. To this day, the story surrounding the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor stokes controversy and conspiracy theories. This book provides conclusive evidence that shows how the US military missed so many signals and how it could have avoided the events of that fateful day. Živel napredek, živela svetloba! : Zgodovina elektrifikacije Ljubljane
The Edge of Objectivity An Essay in the History of Scientific Ideas
Originally published in 1960, The Edge of Objectivity helped to establish the history of science as a full-fledged academic discipline. In the mid-1950s, a young professor at Princeton named Charles Gillispie began teaching Humanities 304, one of the first undergraduate courses offered anywhere in the world on the history of science. From Galileo’s analysis of motion to theories of evolution and relativity, Gillispie introduces key concepts, individuals, and themes. The Edge of Objectivity arose out of this course. It must have been a lively class. The Edge of Objectivity is pointed, opinionated, and selective. Even at five hundred pages, the book is, as the title suggests, an essay. Gillispie is unafraid to rate Mendel higher than Darwin, Maxwell above Faraday. Full of wry turns of phrase, the book effectively captures people and places. And throughout the book, Gillispie pushes an argument. He views science as the progressive development of more objective, detached, mathematical ways of viewing the world, and he orchestrates his characters and ideas around this theme.
