The Yugoslavs

A lively, well informed & sharply focussed picture of a pivotal nation & its people towards the end of Tito’s regime–a ‘country as yet to make its choice of civilizations’– written by a correspomdent of the Washington Post who lived in Belgrade as chief of its Eastern Bureau (he was born in Yugoslavia). Even a dictator’s control over national life is tempered by the traditions & mental attitudes of his subjects. I have tried to look at Yugoslavia in terms of culture & civilisation, not just in terms of government.
