Despite slight shelf wear, the book is secure. Published nearly 200 years since its initial manuscript, this journal is a must-have in literary history and an immediate worldwide success. The nine-month journal recounts Boswell’s life in London when he was only twenty-two, and is renowned for its insight and accurate detail. It records the facts of the author’s life frankly and honestly, as well as for its sharp evaluation of his thoughts and decisions. About the Yale Editions of the Private Papers of James Boswell: In 1949, Yale University began a literary-historic endeavor to publish a long-forgotten and substantial assortment of papers, letters, manuscripts, and journals of 18th century Scottish biographer, lawyer, and diarist, James Boswell. The papers, retrieved centuries after being lost, were compiled by Ralph Isham and then claimed by Yale University. The institution constructed a devoted department to edit and release the journals and correspondences. In 1950, the BOSWELL’S LONDON JOURNAL was the first of the thirteen volumes which have been published since. From 1949 to 1979, Frederick A. Pottle, Sterling Professor of English Emeritus at Yale University, led the Yale Boswell Editions.
