Jasenovac is the third book by Nataša Mataušić, museum adviser of the Croatian History Museum. Based on selected passages from her former books, Jasenovac 1941-1945. Death Camp and Labour Camp and Jasenovac — a Photographic Monography. It also includes new findings regarding Jasenovac Concentration Camp. Each chapter describes chronologically important historiographical topics, Clearly argued, On the founding of the camp, the deportations, liquidations, holocaust and genocide practiced there, and the number 01′ the victims. The author includes important information from her groundbreaking photographic monography, showing how documentary photographs were used manipulatively during the Communist era for the purposes of political propaganda. A whole chapter is dedicated to the campaign run by Diana Budisavljević, who rescued a large number of children from the camp, helped by many people from Zagreb and those living in the villages around Jasenovac. In this book, facts are presented, facts based solely on original sources and documents. Another important chapter, for me, of course, is the one dealing with the establishment of Jasenovac Memorial Site in 1968, the Flower Memorial designed by Bogdan Bogdanović, the work of Jasenovac Memorial Site today, the expert work of the Institute, and the aims of museum work and research. We are grateful that the author of this book has placed our work in the context of historical and museological expertise, devoid of any political insinuations. This book speaks of the past, but faces the future, with a clear emphasis on the contemporary obligation and duty we share – to remember the victims.
