The book attempts to guide the teacher through the forest of conflicting theories on the nature of language, on linguistic analysis and on language learning, and to equip him for the objective analysis of available materials. For the practical teacher there are chapters on language laboratories, on games, drills and exercises of various types, and on testing. An important part of the book is devoted to techniques which enable the teacher to analyse his own language teaching and that of others. Although the examples are mostly in English, French, German and Spanish, the techniques temselves apply to the teaching of any language. Those responsible for language teaching policy and supervision will find in this book a framework for the analyxsis and delimitation of research problems with some special techniques for the use of computers in such research. There is also a systematic biliography of more than seventeen hundred items, listed under some hundred different topics related to the subject.
