Set in a small Czech town during the final days of the Second World War, this novel follows the irreverent, jazz-obsessed teenager Danny Smiřický as history’s grand upheavals collide with youthful preoccupations. While the German occupation collapses and talk of resistance and heroism fills the air, Danny is far more concerned with girls, music, and his own restless ambitions. The result is a sharp, ironic portrait of a society on the brink of liberation, exposing the gap between patriotic myth and everyday reality. Blending satire, coming-of-age narrative, and political insight, the book examines cowardice and courage in their many ambiguous forms. Its candid tone and focus on ordinary lives challenged official narratives when it first appeared. The author, a prominent Czech writer who later lived in exile in Canada, was known for his wit, moral clarity, and subtle critique of totalitarianism.
