The Routes of the Sea

The Routes of the Sea is an exhibition and book related to sea charts from the 16th century to present times, organized by John Nurminen Oy in 1988. The exhibition was held at Huolintatalo in Helsinki, and the book, titled The Routes of the Sea: Sea Chart from the 16th Century to Present Times, was published in the same year. The book contains 160 pages and features illustrations and maps, with text in English. John Nurminen Oy was a shipping company founded in Rauma, Finland, in 1886 by the Nurminen family. The company ceased its shipping operations in the early 1960s. Before the establishment of the John Nurminen Foundation in 1992, Juha Nurminen, a descendant of the Nurminen family, collaborated with John Nurminen Oy on various maritime-related projects, including exhibitions. The John Nurminen Foundation, established by Juha Nurminen, focuses on marine cultural heritage and environmental protection, particularly in the Baltic Sea region. It has published numerous books and organized exhibitions related to maritime history and culture.
